Keith McPherson, April 22, 1942 – November 12, 2009.
After a long and courageous fight with lung cancer, Allen Keith McPherson died suddenly on Thursday November 12.
Keith was born the second son of Roe and Bessie Lee McPherson on April 22, 1942 in Houston, TX. He grew up in Houston with a very loving family and the special bond he shared with his older brother, Roe, was a constant source of love and laughter to the end of their days. After attending University of Texas at Austin for 2 ½ years, Keith returned to home to graduate from the University of Houston with an Economics and Finance degree. However, his love and loyalty to the Texas Longhorns could not be denied and with the passing years “the Horns” held a special place in his heart.
Shortly before graduation, Keith met another native Houstonian, Penny Holman on a blind date. Neither of them was eager to keep the date arranged by Keith’s mother and Penny’s sister. However that date became the beginning of a 42 year marriage. After earning an additional degree in Accounting from the University of Houston, Keith was employed by Occidental Petroleum Company.
Keith and his family were transferred from Texas to California to Colorado and eventually to Tripoli, Libya in 1979. After 2 ½ years overseas, he and his family returned to the U.S. and settled in Salado, TX where he began his career as Controller for UMHB in 1983, later moving to Temple. Twenty-three years later, Keith retired as Associate Vice-President for Finance. He considered his friends and colleagues there to be a second family. The love and support extended to him by his UMHB family, especially during his illness, was a great source of comfort and assurance of the kindness of men’s souls.
Keith is preceded in death by his parents, Roe and Bessie Lee McPherson and brother Roe McPherson, Jr. Keith is survived by his wife Penny, son Drew McPherson of Temple, daughter Amanda McPherson of Austin, sister-in-law Beverly McPherson of Riverton, WY, nephew Brad McPherson and wife Sheila and family of Riverton, WY, niece Brenda Radloff, husband Ryan, of Eugene, Oregon, sister in law Holly Pizzitola of Houston, niece Heather Phillips, husband Dave and family of Austin, brother in law Gary Holman and family of Houston, sister in law Donna Holman and family of La Porte, TX, sister in law Candy Barker and family of Rye, TX.
