Kay Smith, age 71, of Algona passed away on Wednesday, January 8, 2020. Kay Lucille Harkness, the daughter of Charles and Wilma (Clark) Harkness, was born on June 8, 1948 in Forest City, Iowa. She had worked as a crossing guard and then became a CNA at Algona Manor Care Center, retiring in 2011. Kay met Larry Smith when Kay’s son Todd was in the big brother program. Larry became Kay’s significant other for many years. Larry had no children of his own, he stayed by Kay’s side and her 6 children’s side through the good and the bad times. He never left Kay’s side. They were united in marriage on October 14, 2017 at St. Cecelia Catholic Church in Algona. She enjoyed her cats, sewing, crocheting, canvasing, gardening, canning, camping and fishing. Left to cherish Kay’s memory is her husband, Larry; children, Todd (Laura) Dyslin of Mason City, Brian Dyslin of Indianapolis, IN, Penny Dyslin of Forest City, Holly Hamlett of Cedar Rapids and Stacy Dyslin of Forest City; 21 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; and a brother, Glenn (Pat) Harkness of Apple Valley, MN. She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Kaylenne Dyslin; a sister, Dixie Harkness; and a brother, Kenny Harkness.
