Kathryn M. “Kathy” (Ferguson) Qualls, 64, of Mishawaka, peacefully passed on to her heavenly home at 2:20 a.m. Monday, May 23, following an extended illness.

She was born Aug. 9, 1951, in Grayling, Mich., to the late Robert G. Ferguson and Mary E. (Howell) Ferguson, who survives her in Osceola.

Also surviving are her children, Marcy Cripe of South Bend and David (Hannah) Qualls Jr. of Mishawaka; sisters Linda (Bill) Becker of Elkhart and Tami Ferguson of Osceola; grandchildren Breanna, Austin and Sorin Qualls, Broddy Tate-Qualls, Airyenne Eichorst and Jordan Cripe; nieces Laura Becker, Jen (Chris) Wilson and Beth (Bryan) Regulinski; and nephews Rob Becker and Michael Frost.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Wanda Frost, and a grandson, Toby Qualls.

A memorial celebration of Kathy’s life will be begin with visitation at 4 p.m. followed by a memorial service at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 26, at Billings Funeral Home of Elkhart. Pastor Gary Sheets will officiate and cremation has taken place in accordance with Kathy’s wishes.

Kathy retired from Bender’s Corner Store in Elkhart in 2014 after 22 years there. She was known for her kind heart and her reputation for stopping whatever she was doing so she could help someone in need. She enjoyed quilting, embroidery, gardening and baking, and will be missed by her family and friends. The family thanks her niece Jen Wilson for all of her sacrifices while caring for Kathy and all those who strengthened the family with words and gifts of love and hope; and to the nurses and staff at the Center for Hospice Care.
