Kathryn “Kay” (Ivey) Briggs, a Middletown resident for over 70 years, died April 2, 2017 at the age of 100. She was born in Birmingham, AL on Oct. 7, 1916 to John Barna Ivey II and Katherine Fern Ivey. She graduated with a French major from Birmingham Southern University in 1937 and then set out on the adventure of a lifetime. She sailed for France with a group bound to teach English to French students. On the boat, she met Morton Briggs whom she would marry in 1941. This French connection lasted a lifetime.
After the wedding, Kay joined Morton at Harvard while he finished his PhD in French. Their next move was to Middletown where they joined the Wesleyan community and would remain for the rest of their lives. They traveled the world and spent a total of 9 yrs in France (2 yrs with the whole family).
Kay taught French in local schools, worked at Wesleyan’s Honors College and was active in many community organizations.
Kay is survived by her three children: Christopher of Marlborough, NH; Kirk of Vineyard Haven, MA and Kate Holmes of Grand Junction, CO; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
