Vera Kathryn “Kay” Hanon, 96 of Centralia, passed away Saturday, March 21, 2015 at 10:00 A.M. at Twin Willows Nursing Home in Salem.Mrs. Hanon was born June 3, 1918 in Centralia, daughter of Vern C. and Hazel Ruth (Thomas) Welch. She married Leland H. “Lee” Hanon on November 5, 1939 in St. Charles, Missouri, and he preceded her in death on March 3, 1989.Mrs.
Hanon is survived by one daughter, Diana K. Bassett and friend Denny Wernsman of Salem; one son, Jerel R. “Jerry” Hanon and wife Carla of Centralia; six grandchildren: Amy Jo Bassett of Salem, Eric Hanon of Centralia, Jeremy Hanon and fiancée Melissa Gardner of Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, Jessica Dial and husband Travis of Iuka, Stuart Hanon of Ashley and fiancée Amy Brashear, and Joseph Wernsman of Salem; two great grandsons, Kaleb Lambert and Brian Dial; many nieces and nephews; one brother-in-law: Ralph L. Hanon and wife Beverly of Huntington Beach, CA.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Hanon was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Laura Lee (Hanon) Copple; a son, Charles Eugene Hanon; granddaughter, Donna Lee Copple; sister, Emily (Welch) Pate; one brother: Vernon Welch; two sister-in-laws: Helen Welch and Lilly Hanon; three brother-in-laws: Lowell Hanon, Charles Hanon and Simeon Pate.She was a homemaker and a member of First Christian Church of Centralia, the Christian Women’s Fellowship and the Women’s Bible Study Group. She had been a former Girl Scout Leader. She was a resident of Twin Willows Nursing Home in Salem for the past seven years. She was well known in her neighborhood for her popcorn balls at Halloween time. Mrs. Hanon enjoyed reading, gardening, knitting, and spending time with her family.
