Kathleen Rebecca Vaughn, 88, of Merritt Island FL, Macon GA, Atlanta GA and Sunnyvale CA died on December 17, 2017.  Kathleen was born on August 5, 1929 in Twiggs County.  She grew up on a farm and later moved to Macon.  This is where she fell for the cute navy guy across the street.  She married him Claybron (BAMA) Vaughn on September 23, 1946 and it lasted 44 years until his death in 1990.  They moved to Atlanta and Mother was very busy being a homemaker.  She was active in the schools and Girl Scouts. When they moved to Sunnyvale CA, she retired and enrolled in DeAnza College.  She took all sorts of classes.  She made the highest score on her verbal test at DeAnza College.  Her most unusual course was computer programing (1983).  She and daddy would work all night huddled around this tiny computer screen with a horrible orange screen and they would write code together.  Soon, Gayle opened up her own business and mother was working at her office doing accounts receivable and being the receptionist.  People loved her voice and several of Gayle’s clients tried to steal her away.  Kathleen and Bama traveled almost every weekend, attending festivals, air shows, going cross-country snow skiing, dancing to the oldies, playing bridge with friends but the most fun for her was going to the horse races. “There off….” was one of her favorite sayings.  They traveled extensively across the US and Canada.  Europe and Israel (1973) was a highlight event.  They traveled to 9 different European countries and then flew into Israel where they were met with armed guards boarding the plane.  Security was tight in Tel Aviv and they had entered a whole new world.  She loved being shown Israel by her friends and got to see so much more than the average tourist. Getting used to all the armed military men and women walking around the street was difficult for her.  After Daddy died, she continued to work until she moved to Florida.  She still kept traveling.  She loved cruising, even though she could not swim and was afraid of the water.  She loved to sit in the suite, read and look at the water.  In Glacier Bay, she had the best seat in the house for a massive calving.  When it got harder for her to travel, she developed new interest:  westerns.  She loved Saddle Up Saturday.  She loved her entire family and was so happy when everyone got together.  She was stubborn, fiercely protective, funny and a wonderful mother.  She will be greatly missed.

Kathleen is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law:  Gayle (Britt) Jones Merritt Island FL and Evelyn Rebecca Vaughn Atlanta GA, Sister-in-law Evelyn Patterson Bolingbroke, GA, Sister-in-law and brother-in-law Bea (Bobby) Brooks Gordon GA.  Nieces: Christy (Phil) Mills Gordon GA, Cheri Carlson Vass NC, Cherie Vaughn Macon GA, Pam Vaughn Macon GA.  Nephews: David (Jill) Brooks Thomaston GA, Keith (Charlene) Brooks Gordon GA.
