Katherine Szilva formerly known as Katherine Madeline Szilagyi passed away on Thursday, January 27, 2022 at her home in Brick, NJ. She was 54 years old. Katherine was known as Katie or Kate to her family members and Kathy to her friends. She is survived by her sister Julia Biancella, brother-in-law Michael Biancella Jr., brother Bela A. Szilagyi, sister-in-law Julianna Szilagyi, her nieces Jennifer Matthews, Julia Au, Amber Morrison and Alyssa Bozarth, and her nephew Michael Biancella III. Kate was born in Tustin, California on August 25, 1967.
She grew up in Monroe, NJ on her parent’s farm where her love of animals flourished. Kate’s career led her to New York where she was a prominent set decorator for over 20 years. She began decorating the windows at Saks Fifth Avenue before transitioning to the film industry where she was a set designer on print ADs, commercials, TV, and feature films. Kate left the film industry to own and operate Tempaper. Most recently, Kate was in the midst of building Kitty Corners a pet focused, consumer product that embodied her love for cats. Kate was extremely talented and a deeply caring person.
She was an inspiration to all that knew her, and her memory will be cherished by so many. She loved making people laugh and cooking lavish meals. She enjoyed spending time with her great nieces and nephews and telling them larger-than-life stories. She was an artist and a force that will be forever missed.
