Katherine Louise Ewin (née Meeker) was born in Olathe, Colorado on November 23, 1920. Since her mother’s name was also Katherine, she was commonly known as Louise. Louise had two sisters, Helen and Barbara. Helen died very young, but Barbara still lives in Walnut Creek, California. During the last few years Louise and Barbara maintained an almost daily letter correspondence. As a young woman, Louise took secretarial training and worked for a time for the Bureaus of Land Management and of Reclamation. During these years she met her future husband, Robert “Bob” Ewin, who worked for the U.S.
