On February 15, 2007, Kasmyra “Kay” S. Ossolinski of Washington, D.C., formerly of Glen Burnie, Maryland, passed away at the age of 92. Beloved wife of 40 years to the late Anthony F. Ossolinski Sr.; Devoted mother of Joseph V. Ossolinski, Anthony Ossolinski Jr. and his wife Kathy and Matthew M. Ossolinski and his wife Rita; Cherished grandmother of Michael, Daniel, Miranda, and Mark Ossolinski. Ms. Ossolinski was born Kasmyra Skok in 1914 in Lebanon, Pennsylvania. She was the cherished only child of Aniela and Antoni Skok, immigrants from Opatkowice, Poland.
She grew up in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, where her father worked in the steel mills. She graduated from Central High School in 1930, at the age of 16. During the Depression she worked briefly in New York City and for the State of Pennsylvania. In 1940, she moved to Washington, D.C., and became a “Government Girl,” working for the U.S. Department of the Navy. While in Washington, she met her husband, and was married in 1944 in Baltimore, at the Polish National Catholic Church on Broadway. The Ossolinskis raised their three sons in the Baltimore suburbs of Arbutus and Glen Burnie. She retired after 27 years with the Navy.
Ms. Ossolinski remained in her home in Glen Burnie after her husband’s death in 1984. She then moved back to Washington in 1992, to live with her youngest son Mathew and his family. During her life, she was a member of the Polish National Catholic Church, the Polish National Alliance, and the Georgetown Senior Center. She enjoyed being with people, whether she was telling them her stories or listening intently as they told theirs. Kay had a love of life and she will be dearly missed.
