Karl William Almquist
PHOENIX – Karl Almquist, 87, of Phoenix, AZ passed away unexpectedly on April 27, 2018. Karl was born September 14, 1930 in Oklahoma City, OK. In 1952, he earned a Bachelors Degree in Accounting from the University of Oklahoma wherehe was a proud member of the Kappa Alpha fraternity. After graduation, Karl served as an Artillery
Officer at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. He returned to the University of Oklahoma in 1954 to complete his Master’s Degree in Accounting. In 1955, Karl began his 32- year career with Price Waterhouse becoming a partner in 1969 while in the New York office. Prior relocations were in Tulsa, Dallas and EI Paso. In 1972, he landed in the Phoenix office where he later became Partner- in -Charge and eventually retired in 1987. In addition to his career responsibilities, he was involved in many civic and charitable organizations serving as a member of the Board of Trustees and Treasurer of the Heard Museum, President of the Barrow Neurological Foundation, President of The Association for Corporate Growth, member of the Phoenix Baptist Hospital Foundation, Treasurer of COMPASS, Treasurer of the Episcopal Diocese and Treasurer for the Christ Church School and, along with his wife, a Founding Member of the Phoenix chapter of the International Churchill Society. He managed to find time for many hobbies including fly- fishing, quail and dove hunting, photography, playing the saxophone, marathon running, exercise fitness and tennis and golf at Phoenix Country Club where he was a member. He loved the beach,
Santa Fe, NM and travelling but his most favorite repeated destination was New York City. He and his wife, Marianne, recently celebrated 66 years of wonderful marriage. They met in high school in Norman, Oklahoma, where they became sweethearts and wed while seniors at the University of Oklahoma. Karl was preceded in death by his eldest son, Kevin. In addition to his wife, Karl is survived by his son, Grant (David Miller), his daughter, Shelley Cooper (Brian), his grandchildren, Kirsten Almquist, Perry Almquist and
Ashton Cooper and his brother Tod (Diane). Karl will be most remembered for treating his wife “like a queen”, raising his three children with constant love, support and devotion and his calm presence that filled the room and provided strength and comfort for everyone who loved him.
