Karen Joan DeLater, 70, of Elkhart, passed away at 11:47 p.m. Thursday, July 10, at IU Health University Hospital in Indianapolis, following a rather brief illness.
She was born Sept. 12, 1943, in South Bend to the late Erwin and Lynne (Spurling) Kowalski.
Surviving are her life companion, Liane Signorino of Elkhart; her sister, Gale LaScola also of Elkhart; her niece, Michelle (Jim) Cockerham of Parma, Ohio; and grandnephews Tyler and Aaron Cockerham.
In accordance with her wishes, Karen’s body is to be cremated. No immediate service has been planned.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Billings Funeral Home in Elkhart.
Karen worked as an upholsterer for 15 years for Du-Mor in Elkhart. After her retirement, she continued to upholster for private individuals. She was an accomplished woodworker as well and enjoyed building things.
She was also an avid photographer and naturalist and enjoyed spending time outdoors, where she could photograph wildlife and nature scenes while camping or hiking. She was always positive and happy and will be best remembered for her upbeat personality and always trying to find the good in everything.
