Karen Jane (Malcolm) Von Gunten, of Greenfield, IN, passed away on Friday, July 15, 2022, at IU Methodist Hospital, in Indianapolis.
Born in Fort Wayne on January 5, 1948, to the late John H. “Hank” and Phyllis Maxine (Sible) Malcolm, Karen spent her formative years in the Churubusco area and graduated from Huntertown High School.
Karen was married to John Von Gunten on July 24, 1971, in Fort Wayne. Their 50-year journey together was anchored by attention to the importance of family and especially by her outgoing personality and sense of humor. Karen’s laugh will not be easily forgotten.
Karen was a lifelong caregiver at work and home. She received her degree in Nursing from Purdue University Fort Wayne. She worked for St. Joseph Hospital and the State Developmental Center in Fort Wayne as an RN before retiring after more than 25 years of dedicated and compassionate service.
In her free time, she enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her granddaughters. She loved to watch them dance. An avid reader, Karen also enjoyed logic puzzles, as well as entertaining and cooking for friends and family. She had an open-door policy, anyone who came in was treated as family and never left hungry.
Karen is survived by her husband of 50 years, John Von Gunten; her two sons, Eric Von Gunten and Matt (Sharon) Von Gunten; a godson, Matthew Jackson; four siblings, Jerry Malcolm, Jean (George) Aylesworth; Alan Malcolm, and Mike (Margaret) Malcolm; numerous nieces and nephews; and two grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Ashley.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her infant son, Jeffrey Alan Malcolm; two brothers, John Lee Malcolm and Brian Malcolm; and a sister, Marcia Jackson.
