Kalin Mikhail Restad was born on May 10, 1988 in Grass Valley, California to Gregory Restad and Kimberly Larson-Restad. His heart stopped beating on September 1, 2022 at the age of 34 because of an opioid overdose. He grew up in Springville, Utah and moved to Denver, Colorado in 2018.
Kalin was a rambunctious kid with a wide grin. He expressed himself through words and sound, melding the two through composing and performing music. In his free time, you could find him playing guitar and drums, concert-going, disc golfing, skateboarding, writing and drawing. He loved being outside.
He was deeply feeing and had a lot of empathy. He attracted people with his humor, charisma, kindness, courage and listening ear. He was intuitive and connected with people of all ages.
In part, his big feelings made Kalin struggle with addiction, but time and time again he chose to fight it. He found deep healing at a residential treatment program in Denver. While acquiring an understanding of trauma, addiction and recovery, he established a music program and gave guitar lessons to fellow residents. He was sober for the better part of three years up until his death.
When someone we love dies, it tears a hole in our heart. The scar is a testament to the relationship that was had with that person. If the scar is deep, so was the love. We can love and be cut, or even gouged, and can heal and continue to live. Scar tissue is stronger than the original flesh ever was. Kalin had many wounds and still shaped a beautiful existence. Those who loved and now miss him can, too.
He is survived by his father Gregory Restad, siblings Erik Shewmaker, David (Shaundra) Larson, Ashleigh (Clinton) Restad Cook, nieces Cassidy, Jessica, Avery, and nephew Colin. He is preceded in death by his mother, Kimberly Larson-Restad, and twin brother Garrett Restad.
Another will be on Saturday, October 8 at 11 am at Johnny Roberts Disc Golf Course at Memorial Park, 8001 West 59th Avenue Arvada, Colorado.
