June Mary DeBoer Unger M.D., age 79, passed away peacefully in Scottsdale, Arizona on March 19th with her husband and six children surrounding her. June was born on May 28, 1932 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Her mother was Mary Elizabeth DeBoer and her father, Bokke DeBoer.
June graduated from Holy Angels High School in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1949 and from Marquette University in Milwaukee in 1953. While attending medical school at the Womens’ Medical College of Pennsylvania, she met her husband, George Francis Unger II. George and June were married on June 22, 1957. June graduated from the Womens’ Medical College of Pennsylvania in 1958. In 1959, June attended the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Medicine. She completed her residency at Fitzgerald Mercy Hospital in Darby, Pennsylvania in Radiology between 1959-1961. She was board certified in Radiology in 1962.
George and June moved to Elm Grove, Wisconsin in 1962. From 1962-1985, June worked at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Milwaukee and was also Associate Professor at the Medical College of Wisconsin. She later went into academic practice at the University of Wisconsin in Madison where she was a Professor of Radiology from 1985-1995. June was a Fellow of the American College of Radiology, President of the Milwaukee Roentgen Radiology Society, President of the Wisconsin Radiologic Society, and a member of MENSA. June had a passion for travel that she combined with her work and family life. She traveled to Botswana, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Egypt, Tunisia, China, Taiwan, Indonesia, Tibet, Nepal, Australia, New Zealand, and throughout Europe and the Americas. Perhaps her greatest accomplishment was her ability to raise six children, maintain a successful medical career, and nurture her creativity. She was an artist who enjoyed painting, knitting, and sewing. June was a gourmet cook and her elegant meals were often the centerpiece of family holiday celebrations. She was a loving mother, role model and hero to her family. Her family will miss her sense of humor, guidance, and passion for life.
