Julio was born and raised in the Upper West Side of Manhattan of New York City in a two-parent household with two brothers and two sisters: Jean, Ronald, Joanne and Thamar Popotte.
Julio went to Holy Name of Jesus Elementary School, Rice High School and The Lincoln University of Pennsylvania. While at Lincoln University, he became a member of the prestigious Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc, Mu Chapter. He graduated with a degree in Education. He was highly accomplished, and extremely driven in his line of work which led him to earning two Master’s Degrees and a Doctoral Degree. Over the years, we all watched in awe as he excelled in his career as an Educator for the Archdiocese of New York and the Department of Education. He was especially passionate about volunteer work, and even in the last years of his life, he dedicated himself to helping others.
Julio has always been an incredible support system for all of us, especially to the elderly and kids in the community. He organized AAU basketball tournaments throughout the city as basketball was a huge passion of his. He was always ready with a helping hand; always having a positive attitude. He was a symbol of selfless humanity. He was always there, at the drop of a hat, if you needed anything. He gave us strength in times of trouble, wisdom in time of uncertainty, and sharing in time of happiness.
Julio was not married and did not have children. However, he was a father figure in his nieces’ and nephews’ lives: Amali, Sophie, Thamar, Kaia, Kaleb, Karter and Alana. The stories about him will live on in their memories. He was always a family man and loved his family profoundly.
There are so many good memories from the family and friends of Julio. Love is not an easy feeling to put into words. Nor is loyalty, or trust, or joy, but he was all of these. He loved life completely and he lived it intensely. He was very loyal to family. Julio was a wonderfully kind, ambitious, brave, calm and faithful person. He was a person of great service and compassion. Above all, Julio believed in God.
There were many wonderful aspects to Julio’s life, and many ways that he touched our lives. He will be remembered as a wonderful son, brother, a great friend, a generous uncle, cousin, and nephew.
We will all miss Julio Popotte. He has touched our lives and we will NEVER forget him.
