Julia Ruth (Hokanson) Winfield

Julia Ruth Winfield passed away on April 1, 2016 from cancer. She was born on Friday the 13th in 1961 in an old WWII type military hospital in Fort Lawton, WA. Julia was the first child of Martha Pratt Hokanson of Los Angeles, California and U.S. Marine Steve H. Hokanson of Star Valley, Wyoming. Her brother Stephen Pratt was born in Seattle in 1962, Rachel Kay was born in 1963 in Omaha, Neb, they were joined by sister Sarah Ann who was born in Paris France in 1966. A brother Jared Dale joined the family in 1969 and Reuben Jay was born at McChord AFB in Washington in 1973.

Julia’s preschool began in Taipei, Taiwan, her schooling continued at the American School in Paris, France with classes also in Germany all before the 2nd grade. She was a newspaper carrier for the Standard Examiner while in school. She graduated from Ogden High School in 1979 and went on to Weber State College earning her Bachelor’s degree in Communications.

She worked at Weber State as a secretary; she was a very fast typist. She also supervised the Economics Dept. clerical staff. She later worked at UDOT for about 7 years.

She married Robert Atkinson; they were later divorced. She met Robert Winfield at a singles ward activity, when he offered to warm her cold hands. Julia and Bob were married January 14, 1994 in Ogden. Their son Ethan was born November 1994. Julia and Robert were sealed in the Ogden LDS Temple in 1997. She had numerous church callings serving in ward and stake primary. She especially enjoyed serving as the children’s Primary music leader.

She played piano and the violin. She made multiple crafts and gifts she gave to others. She enjoyed reading, knitting, crocheting and sewing. She loved children and they loved her. She had beautiful handwriting; enjoyed following politics, edited family histories, had a family newsletter and was well organized (as taught by her mother). She also enjoyed shopping, cooking movies, trips and family get-togethers.

Julia’s grandfather, Mathoni Mead Pratt was a grandson of Parley P. Pratt and Julia’s father was a son of Julyous Arthur Hokanson and Florence Rachel Hepworth. Julia’s family moved on a humanitarian transfer to Ogden, Utah. Her grandfather Julyous died seven days later and her grandmother died three months later in the Ogden Golden Manor. Julia often went to perform for the residents at the Care Center with Hokanson and Larsen children.

She is survived by her husband, Bob; her son, Ethan; step-children Aleena “A. J.” Winfield, Robert and Mindi Winfield, and Victoria and Scott Witt.; 17 grandchildren; siblings, Stephen Pratt (Shannon) Hokanson, Rachel Kay Davidson, Sarah Ann (Brent) Hobbs, Jared Dale (Colette) Hokanson and Reuben Jay (Heather) Hokanson.

Julia was cheerful, supportive, accepting, caring, always cheering people on. She was mild-mannered, positive and looked for the good in all.
