My Mom is a fighter. She has been her whole life. No matter what obstacle was in her path, she took it on and made sure it never affected those she loved and cared for. She was a great Mom to Jean, Richie, and me as well as a second mom to Joe. Through our good times and our bad times, she was always there to praise us or catch us but always loving us. She was a great sister to Helen and Eddie, always being there for them. She loved her daughter-in-law JoAnn and her Granddaughter in Law Susanette as much as she loved her own children. To say she loved and spoiled all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren as well as nieces and nephews would be an understatement. Her personality attracted many lifelong friends.
When she was diagnosed four years ago with Alzheimer’s, none of us knew or were prepared for the road ahead. Slowly the woman I knew was fading. The strong woman I was raised by was now weakening. It was hard to see that. While her mind and body were getting weaker, her will stay strong. She was feisty and was not giving up. Even when she was hospitalized earlier this year, when some thought she would not recover, she fought and got well. These last few months before her passing, there was an improvement. She looked better than she had been in a while and still carried on just like she had her whole life. By not letting things stop her until the very end. Like a fighter should.
