Julia Ben Majors Harris, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and aunt, was welcomed into heaven on January 2, 2016 at the age of 98. She was born to Benjamin Hick Majors and Sarah Louise (Loudie) Langston Majors of Mount Vernon, Texas on October 19, 1917. Ahead of the times in many ways, she was an athlete, playing on her school’s volleyball team. A graduate of Highland Park High School, she pledged Sigma Kappa and graduated from SMU, then wed William Wesley Harris, a Kappa Sigma from Corsicana, on June 20, 1939.
Not the typical marry-in, Julia Ben quickly adopted her new family, counting her in-laws among her closest friends, and creating opportunities for extended family to play together and know one another on a deeper level. She acted as surrogate mother to many, sending care packages during exams, meeting new parents and baby coming through town, and cooking favorite dishes for birthdays, her loved ones’ friends always welcome at her table.
