Julia Almetia Davis, affectionately known to family and friends as Almetia, was the fifth child born to Elmer and Linnie Nahaw Stephenson in Lawrence County. She departed life January 1, 2014.
Almetia had a strong faith in the Lord and was an active member in Macedonia Cumberland Presbyterian Church where she was the oldest member and served as an Elder, Treasurer and the Missionary Society.
Those people who knew the real Almetia would say she truly loved people, she desired to be compassionate, tried hard to be honest, fair and to show justice to all mankind. She had a deep sensitivity of the creative arts and found deep satisfaction and fulfillment when engaged in activities such as painting, writing poetry, creating pottery and other crafts.
She completed her undergraduate and graduate work at Alabama A&M College.
Mrs. Davis served in the public schools of Decatur for 31 years and her work exemplified creativity and excellence in teaching all children with their varied learning abilities. After 31 years she retired and once stated, “I have not reached the highest mountains in my profession, but I have certainly scaled some of the sharpest cliffs.”
Almetia Davis is predeceased by her husband, Mr. Benjamin Davis, Sr. and leaves behind one son Benjamin Davis, Jr., Decatur, Alabama; One granddaughter, Nakima Davis, Washington, DC; and many other relatives and friends.
