Judy Faye Jantschi, 72, passed away in her Castle Rock home on Tuesday, September 7, 2021 with her loving husband by her side. She bravely suffered without complaint the many symptoms of Lewy Body Dementia and Parkinson’s over 6 years. She was born April 17, 1949 in Hot Springs, Arkansas to the late Archie C. Hobgood and the late Alice R. Veazey Cash. Judy was predeceased by her sister, Volina Annette Cogburn Baumgart and brothers-in-law Al Baumgart and Phil Cogburn.
She is survived by her husband of 39 years, Michael, of Castle Rock, CO, her sister-in-law Kathy Callahan, Fulton, NY, brother-in-law Stephen Jantschi, Sacramento, CA, and her nieces, Tricia Cogburn (Robert Barnes), Benton, AR, Marshell Davis, and her nephew Steven Cogburn, Hot Springs, AR. She is survived by her cat Shadow, who she lovingly raised from 3 months of age after her Dumb Friends League adoption.
Judy graduated from Hot Springs High School. She went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education at Southern Nazarene University. After teaching elementary school for 8 years, she returned to college and earned a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science at University of Maryland, College Park. Here she met and married Michael George Jantschi. She worked at several restaurants as a waitress to pay her own expenses.
She worked in the computer industry over 20 years for IBM, BDM Federal Inc, Computer Sciences Corporation, Loral Space Systems, and Lockheed Martin, and was a subcontractor to Unisys Corporation and the Federal Aviation Administration – Air Traffic Management.
At IBM she programmed computer telephony applications in “C” for the Computer Telephony System. She planned, implemented and did analysis and report for system capacity test. System was client server with telecommunication’s configuration: ROLM switches, Token Ring LAN, S/370 access and AS/400 access. Judy was awarded IBM Informal Award. Judy designed for trajectory extrapolation/conformance monitoring for flight paths. She coordinated analysis of fault tolerance requirements for flight planning, track management, conflict alert and warning design. She designed and programmed database for flight planning. Rational was used as development tool. Ada was the programming language. Judy also did requirements analysis and software design for client server mailroom system composed of OS/2 and PS/2s using Clean Room Methodology. Judy did software development of data management product – Booch object oriented design and C++.
At BDM Federal Inc.
At Unisys Judy was System Architect for Health Information Management system. System was legacy subsystem interfacing with client server subsystem implemented with Oracle, Powerbuilder, Tuxedo, and Decision Support function.
At Lockheed Martin Judy worked on AEHF Satellite Simulation in Attitude Model Software Development. She worked at Lockheed Martin as a Computer Systems Engineer in Gaithersburg, Maryland and then in Colorado Springs, Colorado. As a systems engineer in Lockheed Martin Air Traffic Management Judy was part of the Advanced Technologies and Oceanic Procedures (ATOP) program. It uses a satellite-based system that integrates flight and radar data processing, advanced digital surveillance and communication capabilities, and enhanced controller tool sets for all three oceanic air traffic control centers, combining common procedures, training, maintenance and support. She wrote requirements (Datalink), data interface communications interface requirement specifications, and system design documents (the Software Infrastructure for the system). The infrastructure was “C” code using TCP/IP running on AIX. She reverse engineered the code for the design for the design document. Additional new design was added to the legacy code design in the systems engineering document. She created a template for the system design documents that was Use Case/Thread Based. The FAA declared that this was the format that the system design documents should follow. She also wrote surveillance threads for system design. She was the Interface contact between surveillance CSCI and subcontractor CSCIs. Judy was a participant in the team which completed ATOP Build 2 System Requirements Review and System Design. ATOP significantly reduced the intensive manual process that had limited controllers’ flexibility to safely handle airline requests for more efficient tracks over long oceanic routes. It also reduced the workload on controllers through the use of electronic flight strips, instead of the labor-intensive paper strip method used for decades to track transoceanic aircraft.
Judy then worked as an online Computer Science teacher for Regis University in Denver, Colorado before retiring. Very few people in the computer industry who started out as software developers could rise to becoming a computer systems engineer.
As a devotee of Paramahansa Yogananda, Self-Realization Fellowship, for her last 20 years, she actively pursued daily personal experiences with God by practicing twice a day deep meditative prayers and other spiritual exercises.
Judy enjoyed regularly hiking with her husband, Michael at state and regional parks and forests in Maryland, West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina, Colorado and Arkansas. She also enjoyed hiking at National Parks: Yosemite, Glacier, Yellowstone, Grand Teton, Kings Canyon, Sequoia, Lake Placid, Bryce Canyon, and Rocky Mountain. She enjoyed hiking at National Monuments: Black Canyon of the Gunnison, Grand Mesa Scenic Highway, and Colorado National Monument. Judy enjoyed the planning of trips and hikes, a task in which she always excelled. She enjoyed road trips to all of the four corners of the state of Colorado, Aspen, and Dinosaur Land Utah.
Judy’s love for her husband Michael saved him body, mind and soul. She is his soulmate who taught him to lead a more spiritual life. She is his loyal and ever-caring best friend. She is the love of all of his lives, a source of ever new joy every moment of their lives together, and a more perfect wife than he could have ever imagined.
Judy was lovingly cared for in her home for the last 6 years of her life by her devoted husband Michael as primary caregiver. He wishes to acknowledge medical staff at Interim Healthcare for training him so that she could remain in her home. Accessible Systems of Englewood provided and installed medical safety equipment, a stairlift and wheelchair ramp. Synergy home caregivers and Denver Hospice staff assisted Michael and Judy the last 2 years of her life. We wish to acknowledge from Synergy: Monica Lopez and Alison Deacon for caring for Judy and Michael for the longest time periods and for their expert professional and loving compassionate care. Several caregivers acknowledged the loving gratitude that flowed from Judy’s eyes and by her touch. They all loved to see her beautiful smiles. We wish to acknowledge the medical staff of Kaiser Permanente, particularly their Neurology staff, for their continued support. Lewy Body Dementia Association’s LBD Caring Spouses support group and website saved her husband’s mental and physical health throughout Judy’s care. We wish to acknowledge Dr. Alan Blaher, DC, who provided Judy with chiropractic care for 15 years. Then when Judy was no longer able to travel, he provided in-home chiropractic care to Judy for more than the last 2 years of her life. His care always left Judy with a big smile, transformed how she felt and sustained her. He is always there for us as trusted friend and medical expert.
Her legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of everyone she interacted with as well as those she reached but never met.
