John David “Dave” Zwanzig, 85, of Ottawa, passed away on Tuesday, June 1, 2021 in his home, surrounded by his children.

Dave was born on December 15, 1935 in Ottawa to William and Evelyn (Drew) Zwanzig. He was a graduate of Ottawa Township High School, Illinois Wesleyan, and John Marshall Law School.

Dave started his career as a private attorney in his father’s practice. He later became the Assistant State’s Attorney of LaSalle County, and then went on to become a LaSalle County Associate Judge, where he served on the bench for 25 years.

He also taught family law at IVCC and the Sheridan Correctional Center. When Dave retired he performed many weddings in the area. During his retirement Dave enjoyed spending the winter in Clearwater Beach, FL, and earning the nickname “King of the Gulf.” He also enjoyed fishing and gardening, but his greatest joy in life was his family. He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren.

Dave was known by many for his generosity and his desire to help others. He is survived by his children; Ann (Scott) Letzel of Naperville, Kurt (Lisa) Zwanzig of Columbus, IN, and Laura May of LaSalle; four grandchildren, Caroline and Lily Letzel and Mackenzie and Mollie May; his former wife, Susan Wren; a brother, William Zwanzig, Jr of Ottawa; a niece, Lisa (Dale) Sarver; a nephew, William (Sandy) Zwanzig, III; and a step-daughter, Heather (Craig) Purcell-Bushno. He was preceded in death by his parents; as well as Judith Purcell, and a step-son, David Purcell.
