On April 1, 2017, JUANITA S. DOWNS. Born Juanita Loreen Smith, April 12, 1921, in Abbottsburg, North Carolina, she was the first of the ten children of Charles P. Smith and Loreen B. Smith. She graduated from Bladensburg High School in 1938 and worked at S. H. Kress & Company in Faytetteville, NC.
On November 22, 1942, she married Sgt. Charles F. Downs, who was stationed at Ft. Bragg, North Carolina, until he was sent overseas. After World War II, Mrs. Downs joined her husband in his assignments in Germany and Japan. In 1955, they returned to Ft. Meade, MD, and settled in nearby Glen Burnie. Sgt. Downs retired from the U.S. Army in 1966, after 30 years of service, and died in October, 1977.
Mrs. Downs is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. & Mrs. Charles F. Downs II, of Glenelg, MD; two brothers: Mr. Haynes C. Smith of Knoxville, TN, and Mr. Hugh F. Smith of Williamson, NC; and three sisters: Mrs. Lucy J. Price of Reidville, NC, Mrs. Judy D. Liles of Chesapeake, VA,, and Ms. Flora A. Smith, also of Chesapeake, VA; as well as several nieces and nephews.
