Sidney O. Whitener, Jr., 79, formerly of Troutman, and a resident of Crumpler, NC in Ashe County, went to be with the Lord after a long battle with Alzheimer’s on Tuesday, June 4, 2013 at Ashe Memorial Hospital.
He was born in Troutman on February 20, 1934 to the late Sidney and Lillian Whitener.
He was a truck driver for International Paper Company where he was employed for 33 years before retiring. He also had a previous job as a tour bus driver.
He was a veteran of the United States Army having served our country honorably.
He was a member of New River Missionary Baptist Church where he proudly served his Lord for many years.
Mr. Whitener was a loving husband and father who enjoyed the company of people. He also enjoyed serving his community by doing things like pulling community floats in local parades, volunteering at Iredell Memorial Hospital, and delivering meals for the Meals on Wheels organization. He was also a man of faith who served on several church boards.
He is survived by his wife, Frances Whitener; daughters, Patty Whitener of Concord and Sherry Marlow (Clyde) of Harmony; sisters, Annie Lapish and Sara Hartline (Johnny), both of Statesville; and a brother in law Leon Eaton of Mocksville, NC.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Pamela Whitener; brothers, Willis and Harry Whitener; and sisters, Barbara Freeze and Joyce Eaton.
