Joyce Nelson was born on November 27, 1937, to Dick and Agnes (White) Kean, in Chardon, Ohio. In her youth, she and her family moved to the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania area. Joyce attended Graceland College in Lamoni, Iowa, and completed her degree in Home Economics at Northwest Missouri State College in Maryville, Missouri. She later earned a degree in Psychology.
Joyce began her career teaching Home Economics in Farmington, Iowa. In 1962, she and her husband Ken Harter, and daughter, Amy moved to Pella, Iowa. There she enjoyed teaching Home Economics and Psychology for many years in the Pella Community School system. She would also teach Psychology at Central College for a time. She loved teaching and working with the students. On August 11, 1979, she was united in marriage to Gene Nelson at South Falls.
Joyce enjoyed many different hobbies over the years, including camping, water and snow skiing, gardening, gourmet cooking, reading, wildlife–watching, and traveling. She was a world-wide traveler, especially enjoying cruises.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Gene, and her daughter Amy.
