Joyce Ann Kemp was born March 10, 1941 in Temple, Texas to Ernest Lee and Julia Whatley Kemp. She passed from this life into the presence of our loving Heavenly Father on May 10, 2014.
Joyce moved with her family to Belton in 1953 and attended Belton schools graduating from Belton High School in 1959. She then attended the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor graduating in 1963 majoring in Education with a Mathematics emphasis. She began her teaching career at Belton Junior High and then continued at Belton High School. She taught in those two schools for a total of 45 years.
She was a beloved teacher and a respected colleague through all of those years. She loved students and invested untold hours in extracurricular activities. She was a cheerleader sponsor, was involved in planning many proms and other student functions. She was a Belton Tiger supporter through and though. In 1979, she was recognized by the students as Honorary Homecoming Queen of Belton High School. Joyce was a member of local, district, state and national education associations. She served for many years on the Board of Directors for the Belton Federal Credit Union. She also served as an officer in the Village of Salado Daughters of the Republic of Texas.
She was a long time active member of the First Baptist Church of Belton. She was a frequent sponsor for youth camps and mission trips. She provided loving care to many babies in the church nursery and invested untold hours preparing meals for Wednesday evening services.
Joyce is survived by her siblings, Leroy and Jean Kemp of Belton, Doris Kemp of Belton, Betty Kemp of Belton, and Jerry and Carolyn Roberts of Salado; nephews and nieces Paul and Cindie Kemp of Cedar Park, Tim and Donna Kemp of Belton, Mark and Annette Kemp of Copperas Cove, Steve and Shelley Roberts of Cedar Park, and Shelley Roberts Cheatham of Round Rock; eleven great nieces and nephews; and two great-great nieces.
Survivors also include many extended family members, former students, faithful friends, and a loving church family. Five traveling girlfriends from the Belton High School class of ’59 have established the Joyce Kemp Math Scholarship through B.E.E.F.
