Jovita Abrego Canales

October 5, 1939 – January 3, 2017

Santa Rosa, TX –

Jovita Abrego Canales, 77, peacefully entered the gates of Heaven on January 3, 2017. Born on October 5, 1939, she attended public schools in Mercedes and was a lifelong resident of Santa Rosa.

Known to her family and friends for her dichos, consejos, and honest and truthful observations about life, she spent a humble life raising her kids and grandkids. She enjoyed drinking coffee and eating at Luby’s and Golden Corral. In the evenings, she would sit on the porch at her house in Santa Rosa and watch kids play at La Placita.

She had a strong faith in God. She believed that without God, a person’s life is meaningless. She always told her children and others “Primeramente Dios!” One of her favorite songs was, “Un Dia A La Vez” by Paulino Bernal.

She enjoyed playing bingo and visiting her sisters and nieces and nephews in Mercedes. It was a pastime that brought her plenty of joy and smiles.

She is survived by her sons, Rodolfo Canales, Jr. (JoAnn) of La Feria; Timoteo Canales of Austin; Ramiro Canales of Austin; Moises Canales of Houston; Saul Canales (Cindy) of Harlingen; daughter, Anita Canales Yerena of Santa Rosa; and numerous grandchildren. Her surviving siblings are Eva Abrego, Elena Ochoa, Jose Antonio Abrego and Noe Abrego.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Rodolfo Canales Sr., who also died at the age of 77, and her parents Nieves Abrego and Sofia De Los Santos Abrego and sisters Maria Dominguez, Juanita Hipolito, Nieves Garcia and Ester Cantu.
