Josephine “Josie” Marie (nee Cavallone) Manypenny, age 88, passed away peacefully on Dec. 21, 2016 surrounded by her loving family.
She suffered from Alzheimer’s disease for six years and is now at peace. Born on April 1, 1928, Josie was fun-spirited, generous, kind and caring. She loved to dance, listen to her favorite music, visit her siblings, go shopping, play the lottery, and most of all, care for her family, whom she loved dearly.
She gave selflessly and was a caregiver for many family members throughout her life. Her husband of 59 years, Louis “Lou”, passed away in 2010. They met at the Viking dance hall on the south side of Chicago.
Josie worked as a clerk-typist in Chicago for several companies, including Ford Motor Co. She married Lou in 1951 in Edgewood, Maryland where he was stationed while serving in the Army. They returned to Chicago after Lou’s discharge from the Army and raised four children in the south suburbs.
Josie continued to work in retail while raising her family, and was active in Junior Women’s Club, the PTO, and Little League. The family moved to Bolingbrook in 1971 and Josie worked for many years as a cashier at Walgreen’s, a job she loved and where she made many friends. She volunteered at the Levy Senior Center in Bolingbrook and bowled in a senior mixed league, until her retirement from Walgreen’s. She cared for her husband, who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, until his death in 2010.
She is survived by her children, Robert; Michael; Nancy; and Lynn (Simon Beckoff); her grandchildren, Leslie; Cari; and Lindsay; great-grandsons Easton and Camden; in addition to many nieces, nephews, and friends. Josie outlived all of her siblings; the late Dora; Mary; John; Jennie; Rose; Angeline; and James, her twin brother. Her shining light and enduring spirit live on in her children and grandchildren, and with those she loved and who loved her back. She will be deeply and forever missed by many.
