Josephine “Jo” Ann Edwardes Nichols was born in Phillipsburg, NJ, April 6, 1946, the middle child of Elizabeth and Vance Edwardes. She was a graduate of Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart in Bethesda, Md., and Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.
She moved to Dallas in 1974 and began her career in the jewelry business at Corrigan Jewelers. Jo met her husband, Joe Nichols, while on a business trip, and they were married in 1977. They were blessed with the arrival of Mimi in 1985 and being Mimi’s mother was Jo’s greatest joy.
In the spring of 1980, Jo, Joe, and Joe’s brother Steve bought Calame Jewelers. They owned Calame’s for more than 30 years, and her talent as a jeweler was well known throughout the Park Cities and Dallas. She adored her customers and they adored her.
Jo loved New Jersey. She loved the fresh, sweet corn and Jersey tomatoes. She loved ice skating on the lakes and ponds, and most of all, vacationing with her extended family on the Jersey Shore in Avalon: hunting for shells, watching Mimi play in the waves, cracking hard-shell crabs on the veranda. She was known to say that those summer trips to Avalon “soothed her Yankee soul.”
Jo was the best wife, mom, sister and friend anyone could ask for. She had a strong faith and loved to share with any and all who asked. She always greeted everyone with a smile. She was enthusiastic, had a wonderful sense of humor, and loved to cook and entertain. Whether it was a fabulous beef tenderloin or wine with friends in the alley, Jo was the consummate hostess. She was adored by her family, admired by her peers, and loved by all who knew her.
She lost her battle with lung cancer Sept. 9, 2014. Surrounded by her family, she passed away peacefully at home. She is survived by Joseph, her loving husband of 37 years, her daughter, Mary Elizabeth (Mimi), sisters Kathleen Fox (James), Nancy Edwardes (Vaughn Buck), and many nieces and nephews.
