Mr. Young passed away peacefully at a local medical facility. He is the husband of Louise Young and father of Joseph Young, Jr.

Viewing is Friday, August 9th from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Mortuary.

JOSEPH YOUNG, SR. was born February 14, 1936 in Charleston, South Carolina to Oliver Young and Maybelle Jenkins Young. He passed away quietly on July 31, 2013 following a lengthy illness.

Mr. Young spent his formative years in Charleston where he graduated from Burke High School in 1954. On September 13, 1958 he married his high school sweetheart, Louise Campbell. To this union were born two bouncing baby boys: Joseph Young, Jr. and Glen Tyron Young.

Shortly after high school, Mr. Young joined the U.S. Navy where he served some twenty-two years, touring Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Thailand, Hawaii and the Philippines.

Family and friends said Mr. Young was a kind and simple man who enjoyed family, sports and entertaining friends. His son, Joseph Young, Jr. remembers Mr. Young as an “Old-school” guy who did not share his feelings unless he was backed into a corner.

In 2011, Mr. Young confessed his faith and joined St.

Mr. Young loved his grandchildren whom he affectionately called “Mouse” or “Worm”. His grandchildren said they’ll always remember Grandpa Young as the “King of Kool-Aid” who chased them around the house with dead lizards or let them climb on his back for a quick ride around the living room.

Joseph Jr. said his father taught him the value of work as he shadowed him on household and automotive projects, two things that Mr. Young took pride in doing. “Dad would show me the job once; then step back and expect me to do it. We boys were always part of the process.” Though some would view Mr. Young as difficult and sometimes sarcastic, many said he was quick to laugh and joke. According to his wife, he was also charming and an incurable romantic.

During his days of good health, Mr. Young was an avid sportsman. He loved the L. A. Dodgers and Dallas Cowboys. In later years, he became a lover of country music, soul food and animal crackers.

While his former colleagues will remember Mr. Young as a dedicated, reliable and no-nonsense supervisor, his family will forever remember the love he shared with them; a love epitomized in the last words he said to his grandson Justin, “Bye little Worm” and granddaughter, Jasmine, “I love you, Mouse.”

Mr. Young was preceded in death by his son, Glen Tyron Young; parents, Oliver Young and Maybelle Calloway; four siblings, Thomas , Dorothy, Janie and Abraham Young. He is survived by his devoted wife of forty-six years, Louise Campbell Young; his son, Joseph Young, Jr., Retired Lt. Commander, United States Navy of San Diego; four brothers, James Young and wife Thelma of Savannah, GA, William “Buster” Young and wife Bernice of Ft. Worth, TX, Nathaniel Young and wife Carol of Harrisburg, VA and Malcolm Young of Charleston, SC; five grandchildren, Brittany and Amanda Young of Redlands, CA, Joseph, Jasmine and Justin Young all of San Diego; two daughters-in-law, Michele Young of San Diego and Glenda Young of Redlands, CA; along with a host of other relatives and friends who will cherish his loving memory forever and always.
