Joseph Thomas Powers, formerly of Cromwell, passed away at The Windsor of Cape Coral in Florida on October 13th at the age of 90. Joseph was predeceased by his loving wife, Mary Jo (Schuh) Powers. They were married in Hartford on June 18, 1955 and eventually settled in Madison to raise their family.

Joseph was born in New London on July 4th 1923. He graduated from Bulkeley High School in 1940 and enlisted in the US Navy as a Corpsman during WWII.

He served in the western Pacific theatre of operations as a marine medic aboard the PBY-2 Catalina rescuing downed aviators. Joseph went on to earn a Bachelors of Science from Massachusetts College of Pharmacy. He earned his graduate degree from UCONN and worked as a pharmacist at Hartford Hospital and eventually as a research chemist for Miles (Bayer) Laboratories in West Haven. He retired with Mary Jo in 1987 and settled on Pine Island in FL for 14 years. Joseph enjoyed family, carpentry, and reading for all of his life. He devoted a great deal of his time to the Boy Scouts and organizing and planning activities for BSA troop 494 of Madison. Joe is lovingly remembered by his eldest son, Tom and wife Rose of Cape Coral, FL; daughters, Nancy and husband, Robert Miller of Rochester, NH; Lynne and Charlie Cook of Sinking Springs, PA; his son, Mark and wife, Heather of Sandwich, MA; his brother Harry (Bud) T. Powers of Sun City Center, FL; his nephew Richard Harris and niece, Patricia Stock and was blessed with 7 grandchildren, Mary, Emily, Adam, Victoria, Tyler, AJ and Chloe. Joseph is predeceased also by his sister, Evelyn Harris.
