Joseph S. Dembek, 97, of New Britain died peacefully on September 30, 2013 after a life-long journey with his family and many friends. Born in St. Louis, MO on April 18, 1916 to Wladyslaw and Antonina Debek and the eldest of 5 children, the family returned to Poland soon after WWI. He spent his youth in Baranowo through the mid-1930’s and returned to the U.S. before the onset of WWII. Sgt. Joe served his country in England, France, Belgium and Germany. In 1945, standing at attention, his Division was congratulated by General Patton who said, “you won because you were braver than the enemy”. Joe proudly enjoyed serving his fellow soldiers as a master chef. Joseph married his sweetheart Helen Piascik in 1944 while on a short leave before going to England. After the war, general contractor Joe built their house on Booth Street.
