Preston- Joseph Royle Piela 79, of 200 Route 2A passed away Sunday morning at the W.W. Backus Hospital in Norwich after a lengthy illness.
He was born in Norwich on July 12, 1934 son of the late Joseph A. and Grace (Royle) Piela. Joe graduated from the Norwich Free Academy Class of 1953. On September 15, 1956 he was united in marriage to Marie Anne Barber at St. Mary’s church in Norwich. Mr. Piela was a vital member of the family business, Piela Electric Inc. where he worked most of his life retiring in 2011. He was a lifelong resident of Preston and served as a chief for the Poquetanuck Volunteer Fire Department in the 60’s and 70’s. JR was an avid gardener and had ample patience. Those who had the the pleasure of knowing him knew he loved a great debate. He may have been a man of few words but when he spoke everyone listened. The light of his later years were his great grandchildren, who were always by his side.
His wife Marie Piela passed before him on January 26, 2012. He was also predeceased by a son, Thomas M. Piela, died March 7, 2011 and a daughter, Joanne M. Piela- Morse died Sept. 4, 2008. Joseph leaves behind a brother, John J. Piela of Preston. Mr. Piela is also survived by a son Joseph W. Piela and his wife Mary Jo Tryba of Mansfield, CT, a daughter, Katherine Piela of Norwich, six grandchildren, Rayleene Seyb and her husband John of Maine, Christopher Piela of Griswold, Megan Piela and her Fiancé Andrew Sharron of Bozrah, Alex Majewski of Norwich, Rebecca Boenig and her husband Kevin of Preston and Jamie Turner and her husband Austin also of Preston. He had six great grandchildren that he loved dearly; Cadence Piela, Emma Piela, Madeline Seyb, Ava Marie Boenig, Kevin Boenig, Jr. and Chloe Turner.
