Joseph Bayer, 94, of Ottawa, died Thursday afternoon, July 28, 2011, at St. Margarets Hospital in Spring Valley. Joseph was born March 28, 1917 in Chicago to Joseph and Mary (McManus) Bayer.
He was an Army Veteran of WWII serving in Austria with the Military Police. He married Shirley Dunn on February 17, 1944. She died March 5, 2003. He was a plumber and pipefitter until his retirement .He was a member of St. Columba Church, #597 Chicago Pipefitters, past commander of Ottawa VFW #2470, Past District Commander of VFW, Ottawa American Legion, Ottawa Moose Lodge and Ottawa Elks Lodge.
He is survived by two children, Penny (Larry) Harmon- Holloway of Toulon and David (Cynthia) Bayer of Ottawa; five grandchildren, Karen McCormick, Keith Harmon, Kimberly Duttlinger, Tiffany and Justin Bayer; six great-grandchildren; 1 great-great- granddaughter; and his dear companion, Sharon Morey. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Shirley and a granddaughter, Kristy Harmon.
