Joseph N. Shugrue, 89, of Locust Grove, VA, formerly of Norwich, CT, entered into eternal peace on September 28, 2015. He was born in Norwich, the son of John F. and Abigail (Fogarty) Shugrue and graduated from Norwich Free Academy. Joe served with the 15th Army Air Force during World War II. He was a staff sergeant assigned as a B-24 nose turret gunner in the 484th Bomb Group based in Italy and earned the Air Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters and the European Medal with eight Stars. In remembering the war he said, “Those were interesting times. I figured I might get killed – and I tried not to worry about it.” Joe flew 28 combat missions, bombing Germany and Eastern European countries allied with Germany.

He married a marvelous Norwich girl named Mary Mumford and has six children and six grandchildren. Joe graduated Magna Cum Laude from Catholic University in 1952 and went on to complete a Master’s Degree in history. In June 1952, he was enrolled in Phi Beta Kappa in recognition of high attainments in liberal scholarship.
