On May 9, 2017 Joseph Anthony Staniewicz, “Joe-The Ironman” passed away. Once a heavy smoker, Joe, at the age of 44 gave up smoking and took up running and then competing in numerous Marathons and Triathlons. In 1999, at age 66, Joe achieved his ultimate goal of competing in the Kona Ironman World Triathlon Championship, placing 3rd in his age group. He also proudly served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict while aboard a Naval Aircraft Carrier. Joe worked as a Sales Manager at the Caterpillar Company and then the Detroit Diesel company from which he retired. At the age of 61, Joe outpaced and apprehended a 25 year-old-robber who had collapsed from exhaustion while trying to out-distance the “Ironman”. Joe then assisted police with the apprehension of a second robber. Joe was a devoted husband to Mildred Staniewicz (nee Maunes) ; beloved father of Christine A. Zeman, Joseph A. Staniewicz Jr, Mary Lee Staniewicz and Denise J. Keeby; loving “Dziadz” of Genevieve, John, Jace, Danielle, Sean, Sally and Kyler; loving “Great-Dziadz” of Colton, Johnny, Anthony, Hunter and Kara; dear brother of James Staniewicz, the late Leo and Daniel Staniewicz and Theresa Zappardino; and Joe’s close friend, Patrick M. Woodward.
