Joseph “Joe” George Portaro, 50, of Morgantown suddenly passed away Monday, March 14, 2016 while working at the WV State Police Academy as the Assistant Director of Training with the rank of First Sergeant.

He was born July 9, 1965 in Clarksburg; son of Benjamin Portaro, Clarksburg and the late Claire Frankenstein Portaro.

In addition to his father, Joe is survived by his wife, Sharon D. Portaro; three children, Benjamin Joseph Portaro, Susanna Marie Portaro, Thomas Jonathan Jackson Portaro; special aunts, Emma Belcastro of Bridgeport, Sylvia Basile of Clarksburg, and Helen Cutright of Bridgeport; siblings, Marie “Bonnie” and Daniel Alder of Springfield, VA, Margaret Barnes, Apple Valley, CA, Annette and Mike Smith of Brownsville, PA, Edward and Chris Portaro of Evergreen, CO, and James Portaro and fiancée, Onnie Bergman of Clarksburg; brother-in-laws and sister-in-laws; Bruce Damasio and Katherine Case of Townson, MD, Carolyn Damasio of New Philadelphia, OH, and Ellen and Jim Trovato of Morgantown; several aunts, uncles and cousins.

In addition to his mother, Joe was preceded in death by one brother, Peter Benjamin Portaro.

Joseph was a graduate of Liberty High School, WVU with a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education, Marshall University with an Associate’s Degree in Police Science, The National Forensic Academy and the FBI National Academy. He was a Veteran of the Army National Guard. He loved the mountains, fishing, hunting and walking in his beloved woods. He was dedicated to his beloved wife of 28 years and three children. He loved his dogs.
