Dr. Joseph J. Grassi, 71, long-time area physician of Lower Nazareth Township, passed away on October 1, 2015. He was the husband of Mary E. (Kosar) Grassi.
Born in Newburgh, NY, he was the son of the late Julius and Rose (Bellino) Grassi.
He was a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and received his medical degree from the Università di Bologna. He completed his general surgery internship through the Yale University Hospital System at St. Raphael’s Hospital in New Haven, Connecticut and obtained his orthopedic residency through the Brown University Hospital System at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island. He completed a second residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Michigan Hospital, Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Dr. Grassi was a Captain in the US Army Medical Corps. He served as a General Medical Officer with the 547th Medical Dispensary in Grafenwohr, Germany and as a Division Surgeon with the 1st Armored Division Artillery HQ Unit in Zirndorf, Germany.
Dr. Grassi held medical staff privileges at St. Luke’s Hospital, Easton Hospital and Lehigh Valley Hospital, where he previously served as Associate Chief of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine.
He was a member of the Pennsylvania Medical Society and was elected President of the Northampton County Medical Society in 2010-2011. He was recently retired from Orthopedic Associates of the Greater Lehigh Valley.

Survivors: his loving wife, Mary; son, Christopher Grassi. Dr. Grassi was preceded in death by a brother Michael and a sister Angela Grassi.
