Joseph Elmer Facer
Joseph Elmer Facer, 101, most recently of Bountiful UT, died January 23, 2016 on his
sweetheart’s birthday.
Mr. Facer was born in Brigham City to Joseph Facer and Emma Elizabeth Richards on August 10, 1914 and since childhood has been known as Elmer, or “Tug” by his college friends. Elmer
attended Utah Agricultural College, now known as Utah State University, where he received
agricultural and leadership awards and was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity. He always
enjoyed sports and while at Utah State he managed the varsity basketball team and for the rest
of his life he remained a diehard “Aggie” fan. Upon graduation in 1935, he was awarded the
Dean Kenneth Ikeler School of Agriculture leadership trophy. His social fraternity, Sigma Chi,
also recognized his contribution to college and fraternity life with the Rocky Mountain
Province L.G. Balfour Sigma Chi award. Following graduate study at Colorado State University,
he was employed by Great Western Sugar Company and worked in both the Sterling and Ft.
Collins, CO districts. It was at the sugar company that he met his wife, Flora Burnell Zang, a
fellow employee and chemist. In 1951, he began a 41-year career in livestock and agricultural
banking, first as vice president of the Denver US National Bank and then as president of two
Colorado independent banks. During his banking years, he was a member of National Western
Livestock Show Association, Denver’s Agricultural and Livestock Club, and the Colorado Small
Business Administration Council. He was named to Who’s Who in Colorado Agriculture.
