Joseph (Joe) Edward Meyer, Sr. passed away peacefully, at age 74, on Thursday, December 9, 2010 at Kindred Hospital in Scottsdale following a year long fight against cancer. Joe was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend who will be greatly missed.
He leaves his wife of 51 years, Joanne (Koerperich) Meyer; his son, Joseph E. Meyer, Jr. and his wife, Lisa; his daughter, Pamela Nied and her husband Daniel; his daughter, Susan D’Angelo; his son, Ricky Meyer and his wife, Rehka; 12 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; and many friends. Joe is preceded in death by his granddaughter, Lindsey Rae Nied who passed away in November, 1996.
Born on March 25, 1936 in Dubuque, IA where he was raised by his mother Mildred, Joe attended Loras Catholic High School and wedded Joanne on July 14, 1959. In his early years, he worked a variety of jobs to provide for his family (often holding down two at a time) including driving a delivery truck for 7-Up, working at the Dubuque Packing House and driving a taxi cab. In 1971 he moved his wife and four children to Rockford, IL where he pursued a 32-year skilled tradesman’s career as a Pipefitter for Chrysler Corporation.
