Joseph Chiarenza, 90, of Old Lyme, formerly of Newington, passed away suddenly on January 3, 2014. He was the beloved husband of Ann (Truscio) Chiarenza for 67 years. His devotion and love for his family was the core of his existence. He attended New Britain High School and served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II. Besides his family, he had an undying passion for music. His musical talents extended to writing and playing the saxophone. He performed with many renowned musicians and bands, including the U.S. Coast Guard Band. Joseph and his family owned a prestigious furniture business in New Britain for many years. He was also a store manager for Sears until his retirement in 1985. He was known by all as a man with a quick wit, who loved a good joke and was always quick to help a friend. Besides his beloved wife, he leaves behind his two daughters, Elaine (Chiarenza) Kozlowsky and her husband Henry of Eastpoint, FL and Nancy (Chiarenza) McKim and her husband John of East Lyme, his granddaughter Rachel Kozlowsky of Denver, CO and grandson John Joseph McKim of East Lyme, his brother, Dr. Frank Chiarenza of Newington, and his brother and sister-in-law, Vincent and Jane Romeo of Old Lyme. He was predeceased by his son John S. Chiarenza.
