Joseph Chester Stafford Jr., 88, lifelong resident of the Norwich area, died on Tuesday, October 22, 2013. The son of Joseph Chester Sr. and Ruth (Peterson) Stafford, he was born on February 11, 1925. An Army veteran, he served during the Korean War. He married Ethel Louise “Lynn” Schumm on June 8, 1957. Together they made their home here raised their five children. She predeceased Joe in November of 1990.
A sports enthusiast and fan of the Boston Red Sox, Joe also loved to participate in many sports. A league bowler, he played baseball and served as coach for the Thames Athletic Club and also Al Abrahams. He served as president of the Norwich Little League, a local standout athlete; he is in the Norwich Sports Hall of Fame. Joe will also be remembered for his commitment to his community as a volunteer, serving in many ways, among them through Hospice of South Eastern Connecticut, also as an advocate with the Ombudsman’s programs for area seniors and nursing home residents. He has also volunteered in the Probate Courts of both Norwich and New London.
