Joseph Chadwick Mayo was born October 21, 1967 in Brunswick, Georgia to the late Reverend M. L. Mayo and Marilyn Boyd Mayo. The last baby of five, “Chad” as he came to be known, was expected to do amazing things and he certainly fulfilled that prophecy. A 1985 graduate of Newnan High School, he was their baseball MVP with his uncanny ability as a pitcher. He was awarded a scholarship to Middle Georgia College where he continued his baseball career.

He would later transfer to the then West Georgia College as a standout player. Chad’s aspirations in baseball were curtailed due to an unfortunate automobile accident that left him paralyzed. Possessed of a keen competitive spirit, he turned to a sport where his physical limitations had no bearing on participation. Competitive fishing became a whole new life for him. He traveled around the country with Paralyzed Veterans of America and became a winner once again. Chad’s most important role in life, however, had nothing to do with competitive sports. His greatest joy in life became his son, Joseph Chandler Mayo, and he felt fortunate that he could be a stay at home dad for him. As he grew older, Chandler came to exhibit the great compassionate spirit that was a part of his father’s personality.

In addition to his parents, Chad was preceded in death by his brothers Randy and Danny. In addition to his son, he is survived by his brother Gary Mayo and his wife Donna Bell Mayo; his sister, Tamara Mayo West. Like family were his friends Phil Pittman and Bubba Bryant. His life was blessed by his constant companion April Maxedon. There is a large extended family of nieces, nephews and cousins.
