Poestenkill – Joseph B. Vartigian, 82, of Snyders Corners Road died Tuesday, February 3, 2015, at his residence after a brief illness.
Born in Troy, he was son of the late Richard Vartigian and Zabel (Elizabeth) Menasian Vartigian and beloved husband for 62 years of Lois Weston Vartigian. He was raised in Troy and resided in Poestenkill since 1970 and was a graduate of Troy High School class of 1951 and an Associates degree from State University of New York Albany.
Joe was a Chief Warrant Officer CW4 in the New York Army National Guard, Division of Military and Naval Affairs for 44 years.
He was a Life Member of the Sullivan-Jones VFW Post # 7466 Poestenkill Men’s Auxiliary and a Life Member of Lansingburgh Veterans and a Life Member and Past President of the Troy Bowling Association. He was also a member of the American Legion Post #1489 Wynantskill and a past member of the Brunswick Lodge of Elks and the Poestenkill Fire Company .
Survivors in addition to his wife include four sons, Richard A. (Effie) Vartigian, Vero Beach, FL, Joseph (Mary) Vartigian Jr., Niskayuna, Lawrence (Diane) Vartigian, Troy and James (Margie) Vartigian, Warrensburg; two daughters, Karen (Frank) Alvarez, Somerville, SC and Linda (Wade) Hastings, Averill Park; a brother, Leo Vartigian, Troy; two sisters, Sarah Gaudette, Waterford and Mary Elliott, Latham; 11 grandchildren, Richard Jr., Tara, Jennifer, Jonathan, Jessica, Lawrence Jr., Nicole, Brandon, Benjamin, Nicholas and Brooke; 5 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three brothers, George, Paul and Harry Vartigian and a lifelong special friend, Walter Luce .
