Joseph Anthony Furfey, 85, of Silver Ridge West in Berkeley, NJ, was born and raised in Bloomfield, NJ.

He was a graduate of Seton Hall Prep and University. He attended Immaculate Conception Seminary in Darlington and was ordained a priest on June 4, 1955. His assignments for the Newark Archdiocese were Queen of Peace Parish of North Arlington, St. Genevieve Parish of Elizabeth, St. Joseph’s Parish of Jersey City, and Immaculate Conception Parish of Montclair. During the Vietnam War, he volunteered to be an Army Chaplain where he served at Ft. Meade, MD, Ft. Sill, OK, and Ft. Campbell, KY and he went on NATO Maneuvers in Germany. He served a tour in Vietnam from 1968-1969. He was awarded a Bronze Star, Combat Air Medal, and ARCOMS, which he felt he did not deserve because he was only doing what he was ordained to do. Married in 1977, he was employed by First Jersey National Bank in Jersey City while residing in Millburn and Lavallette. He was a proud member of the American Legion Post 351 and the VFW.

He was predeceased by his parents Joseph and Laura Furfey, his sister Joan Giblin and his brother James Furfey.

He is survived by his loving family: Shannon and Lyle, Matthew and Tanessa, Leslie, Kurtis, Dougie, Gracie, Little Matt, Kathy, Walt, Eddie, Ian, cousins, nephews, and nieces.
