Joseph A. Messina, 84, of 169 James St., New Haven passed away June 30, 2011 in USVA Medical Center, West Haven. Born in East Haven March 20, 1927, he was the son of the late Gaetano A. and Louise Caruso Messina. He was well known as a musician in the New Haven area. He conducted the Joe Messina Trio for many years, appearing in area night spots including The Debonair in West Haven. He served as a sergeant in the US Army in World War II. He was also a boxer in the post war era when boxing was popular in New Haven, appearing on fight cards at the old New Haven Arena and at Savin Rock.
