José Sousa Nunes, 70, of Wendell passed away peacefully, on August 30 at his home with his wife and daughter by his side. He was born August 14, 1950 in Rosais on the island of São Jorge, Açores, Portugal.

Growing up, José played tuba for the local marching band and played soccer for the town’s club team. Throughout his life, he was a fan of the sport and loved watching soccer matches especially his favorite team Benfica.

In July of that year, they moved to Santa Clara, California. There, he worked in construction. He had a passion for building and fixing things. Throughout his life, José was an incredibly hard worker. The family often joked with him that he would always carry his tape measure or level around to make sure things were perfect.

In 1988, he and his family moved to Wendell, Idaho. He joined his brothers João and George in the dairy business. For 30 years, he and his brothers owned and operated Nunes Brothers Dairy. They worked together, lived next to each other, and raised their families together until they retired in 2018.

José was a lifelong animal lover. He especially loved dogs. He was an avid gardener and had a passion for the ocean and fishing.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years – Fatima; daughter – Sandra (Egidio); grandchildren – Ethan and Vanessa; sister – Clarinda (Deodato), brothers – João (Elvira), Vital (Margarida), George (Gorette); and 11 nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his father – Manuel, mother – Rosa, and sister – Maria Vitoria.

The family is so grateful for all of the love and continued support shown by friends and the community during this incredibly difficult time.
