Medina, Jose C. of Highland, formerly of Puerto Rico, Elmira, Beacon and Clifton Park, NY entered into rest Friday, May 30, at Vassar Brothers Medical Center, Poughkeepsie, NY. He was 95. Born December 8, 1918 in Yabucoa, PR he was the son of the late Jesus and Carmen Serrano Medina. Mr. Medina was a World War II Veteran and honorably served in the US Army from November 10, 1940 to October, 26, 1945. He studied through the G.I. Bill, obtained a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Puerto Rico, Permanent Teacher Certification in Common Branch Subjects, and a Permanent Elementary School Principal Certificate from the University of the State of New York. He worked as a teacher in Puerto Rico for eight years prior to relocating to NY. He worked for The New York State Department of Correctional Services for 22 years: as a teacher at Elmira Correctional Facility, Director of Education at Matteawan in Fishkill, and as Education Supervisor at Elmira Correctional Facility from where he retired in January 18, 1981. He was a devout Roman Catholic, loving husband and father of eight children. Survivors include seven children, Jose Medina (Linda) of Lowman, NY, Reinaldo (Patricia) of Clifton Park, Eneida Mendez (Luis) of Newburgh, Hector Medina (Maggie) of Beacon, Lourdes Medina of New Windsor, Lucy Yanchowsky (David) of Wallkill, and Roberto Medina of Houston, TX., one sister, one brother, several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and family members. He was pre-deceased by his loving and devoted wife of 72+ years, Hilda Medina who died on February 4, 2013 and their son Juan Medina who died January 14, 1999.
