Jose Luis Chavez
April 19, 1952 – February 1, 2022
Our father, Jose “Pepito’ Luis Chavez of Harlingen, TX. gained his angel wings on February 1, 2022. Jose was born April 19, 1952 to Salvador and Dolores Chavez. Later, the entire family relocated to the United States in hopes for better opportunities. His entire family worked tirelessly as migrant workers and played conjunto music to make ends meet.
Growing up, Jose didn’t believe he could or would pursue a higher education due to his financial situation, but one High School counselor made an impact that would forever alter his course in life. He completed High School and met the love of his life, Mercedes Chavez. They celebrated 48 wonderful years of marriage. He pursued his Bachelors, Masters and Doctorate in Education. He served his community as an educator, assistant principal, and mentor for over 30 years. Jose also served 4 years in the United States Air Force. His greatest service was always being a devoted husband, son in law, father, grandfather, son, brother, friend and musician.
His view on life has always been that through patience, values, hard work, and love, anything is possible. His passion for music and sharing it with the world through his posts, pachangas, and with his students, shined through at every turn. Music was the connection to his childhood as a way to help provide for his family and a way to express himself.
He is survived by his wife, Mercedes Chavez, daughters Dolores Chavez (Arturo Villareal) and Priscilla Chavez (Caleb Silva), three grandchildren-Juan Jose Soto, Ezabella Alexis Silva, and Caleb Lorenzo Silva. He’s preceded in death by his parents, Salvador and Dolores Chavez, sisters- Lydia Lerma and Teresa Gonzalez, brother-Roberto Chavez.
