Jon Christopher Mitchell of Philadelphia passed away on February 11, 2021 surrounded by his loving family after his lengthy battle with Kidney Cancer at the age of 55. Chris as known to all that loved him was born on December 13, 1965 to Barry and Barbara Mitchell. Chris attended elementary school in Mt Holly, NC and high school at Gateway High in Aurora, Co as well as the Pinkerton Academy in Derry, NH. During his youth Chris and his family relocated many times which resulted in many lifelong friendships all over the country. At the age of 19, Chris began his career with Piedmont Airlines in Roanoke, VA. His airline responsibilities over time continued into service with both the USAir and American Airlines companies, due to airline acquisitions. Chris was dedicated to his position at the airline and he later enrolled and graduated from the highly accredited Rice Airframe & Power Plant School which is FAA sanctioned. Chris truly did his part to “keep em flyin”‘. He loved being an airline mechanic and made many friends in the industry. In September of 2020 he retired from his final work location at Philadelphia International Airport with 35 years of a child Chris loved playing Baseball and Football with his love for the Washington Redskins being front and foremost. He rarely missed an opportunity to catch one of their games or wear one of their shirts. His closet was filled with Redskins merchandise. Chris additionally, had a love for Star Wars boasting a collection full of movies and memorabilia. Chris’s loving girlfriend, Kimmi South, regularly treated Chris to birthday gifts of Star Wars first run movie tickets.Chris was known for making friends everywhere he went, and people never stayed strangers to him for very long. He had an infectious smile that would light up any room he walked in to. Chris and Kimmi as well as many of their friends were members of the PlaneFunVC where they would take annual vacations and Chris was infamous for making friends with the people working in the resorts on nearly every trip. Chris was a man of many hobbies, he had a love for the game of Darts. He started playing for fun in 1986 in Roanoke, VA but, his love for Darts was quickly realized to be a talent and he had a real knack for it. He began playing competitively and eventually competed in regional, national, and world championships. Chris ad his Darts partner David Brammer, became known by their team name “Hammer and Nails”. In his most recent years Chris played on the Olde English Dart League of Philadelphia as well as O’Neils Pub. In 2017 Chris and his team from O’Neils Pub won the championship. Chris also loved playing golf, riding his motorcycle, trips to the beach, & his dads house in the Poconos where he would fish and boat with his dad and brother.Chris is predeceased in death by his maternal grandparents Ruby and Ralph Whittington and his paternal grandmother Sybil Mitchell. He is survived by his baby girl Ava Marie Mitchell of Philadelphia, her mother Stephanie Lalli of Philadelphia, his devoted girlfriend and caregiver Kimmi South of Juliustown, NJ , his father Barry Mitchell of Harveys Lake, Pa, his mother Barbara Mitchell of Chesapeake, VA, his grandparents Marlowe & Betty Mitchell of Taylorsville, NC, his brother and sister in law Michael and Cynthia Mitchell of Virginia as well as their children Logan, Luke, Montana, and Issabella. In addition, Chris leaves behind many aunts, uncles, cousins, and close friends who were like family to him. The family would like to thank Kimmi’s mom Lani Fenimore for coming out of retirement and being with Chris as a home hospice nurse for the last several weeks so his final wishes could be carried out.
