On November 13, 1924, in Ashville, NC, the world was blessed with the birth of Johnny Lee McSwain; the youngest of two sons born to Nancy Oglesby McSwain and Stanyard McSwain. Both of his parents and his brother, Willie preceded him in death. Johnny spent his formative years in North Carolina, where he attended school and assisted his parents with farm work. He did seasonal work in Virginia as a Brick Mason Apprentice.
Johnny’s life journey landed him in Tennessee, where he worked with his uncle, Alfred Oglesby. While in Tennessee, Johnny met and married Lillian Nichols. In 1957, they moved to San Diego, CA where they would raise a family.
During the late 1960’s, Johnny began working for General Dynamic, where he made many long lasting friendships. He retired in 1989 after twenty years of dedication and commitment. Johnny was also considered a “Jack of All Trades”; as a plumber, roofing contractor, electrician and a great cook. He also had his own car wash business in Coronado, CA. Most people recall Johnny’s friendliness and courtesy as he drove around neighborhoods selling watermelons, other fruits and vegetables. Johnny, who greatly enjoyed driving, earned the nickname “Quick Start because he would start his truck while standing on the outside of it, and as always, flashing his big bright smile.
Johnny later united in marriage with Linda Henry. They enjoyed traveling and going on cruises together.
Johnny, who was a fun loving individual, was a member of the “Jolly Riders” Motorcycle Club during his early years in San Diego. After retirement, Johnny lived his remaining years surrounded by the love of family and friends. Johnny had an excellent sense of humor and always enjoyed telling jokes and dancing. He was definitely the life of the party and he will be greatly missed by so many.
